 Barbaresco DOCG Gaia Principe 2013

Aromas of damp cellar floor and coconut lead the nose while the bracing, rather muddled palate shows red cherry, a green note of powdered sage and a confectionary note. Astringent tannins clench the finish.

Aromas of butterscotch, toasted oak, roasted coffee and espresso follow through to the palate along with notes of black pepper.

Barbaresco DOCG Gaia Principe 2004

Prinsi’s Gaia Principe cru is located very near the Gallina vineyard and shows slightly softer and less intense aromas. Winemaking plays a big role here: This is an oak-driven wine that melds supple aromas of vanilla and sweet spice over a lively base of red fruit. There’s also a mineral note of chalk or wet stone that lingers long on the finish. 1/4/2009

Barbaresco DOCG Gaia Principe 2004

There is plenty to like in this wine with its rich dark fruit, Indian spices and leather but it also showed a slightly dank, wet fur character. On the palate, the animal quality had retreated to the side, and the fruit was dominant. Medium finish, a nice wine with a question mark.

 Barbaresco Fausoni Riserva 2010

This opens with aromas of red berry and aromatic herb. On the palate, black pepper and dried sage backup raw red cherry while bracing tannins provide the framework.

Barbaresco Fausoni Riserva 2008

Alluring aromas of blue flower, leather, menthol, dark berry, baking spice and a balsamic note lead the way on this full-bodied, elegant red. The palate doles out ripe black cherry, while notes of clove, white pepper, tobacco, sage and licorice add depth. It’s nicely balanced with firm, ripe tannins. Drink through 2023.

Barbaresco Fausone Riserva 2006

This pretty Riserva Nebbiolo will surely grow softer and finer with age. Those who drink it now will experience smoky, toasted aromas of almond, cigar box, moist earth and powdered licorice. The wine is also elegantly tight and focused in the mouth.

Barbaresco Fausone Riserva 2003

This Riserva Barbaresco scored in the “excellent” range because it is at drinking peak now. The wine is soft and generous and thickly padded with aromas of sweet cherry, almond marzipan, vanilla, red licorice, apple skin, black slate and smoke. It exhibits a remarkable balance between modern and traditional styles. Drink now.

Barbaresco DOCG Gallina 2013

Aromas of underbrush, cellar floor, porcini mushroom and a whiff of menthol lead the nose. The palate is on the raw side, offering sour cranberry, dried herb and star anise alongside assertive, rather grainy tannins that leave a drying finish.  10/1/2016

Barbaresco DOCG Gallina 2012

This opens with aromas of red berry, coffee bean and toast aromas. The palate offers up tart sour cherry, espresso and chopped sage alongside tightly packed, astringent tannins.

 Barbaresco DOCG Gallina 2011

Aromas of toasted oak, espresso, chocolate and mocha echo on the palate, along with notes of chocolate and mocha.

Barbaresco DOCG Gallina 2005

From Barbaresco’s Gallina cru vineyard site, this is a bold wine that delivers impressive power and intensity. The focus here is on spice: vanilla and ground ginger are lavished over Nebbiolo’s characteristic tones of blue flower, licorice, black stone and resin. It stands out as a more obvious and toasty expression of the wine.

Barbaresco DOCG Gallina 2004

This is a generous and round wine from the Gallina vineyard in Neive with pretty wood renderings of vanilla and spice that play a discreet background role to blackberry, red currants, road tar, licorice and anise. Those vibrant spice aromas add a patina of sweetness and softness that works well when combined with the wine’s natural intensity. Drink after 2012.

Barbera d’Alba Superiore Vigneto Much 2007

Barbera Vigneto Much showcases sweet aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and cedar wood behind loads of black fruit and wild berries. The wine is lean and compact on the close with a very cleansing, fresh finish.  1/12/2010

Langhe Nebbiolo Vigneto Sandrina 2011

Dolcetto d’Alba San Cristoforo 2008

Here is a light and thin expression of Dolcetto with a bright fruit personality and loads of berry intensity. Try it with cold cuts, salami or slices of pizza.  1/9/2010

Dolcetto d’Alba San Cristoforo 2006

At first, thin and woody, and not much in the way of fruit. Going back, it showed a little more, but still seemed angular and tannic, although a lot more fruit was visible. A wine that improved with air but only up to a point.  22/12/2011
